With the help of our close industry partners and some elbow grease, we deployed the beta of SoilFLO on March 21st, 2017. A major natural gas pipeline project in Vaughan – Vaughan Mainline Expansion – was generating hundreds of cubic meters of soil per day. TransCanada utilized innovative MetaFLO solidification techniques – through a waste solidification provider – to turn drilling fluid into an EXCESS CLEAN SOIL. Thus, it was used for beneficial reuse to rehabilitate a quarry rather than being disposed of in landfill. TransCanada has implemented the Ontario Excess Soil Regulatory Framework to ensure all soil is being disposed of properly and can be reported to the MOECC. The traditional process to do so is seen below.
The required effort to reconcile trucking logs in the above process requires close to 40 minutes per truckload total between contractor and owner. The highest truck volume per day was 64 truckloads meaning a total of almost 42 hours was spent reconciling those loads.
By automating this process and replacing the paper ticket system, SoilFLO has reduced the time per truckload to just a minute or less – the time required to execute a ticket. The 42 hours would be reduced to just over an hour.
While increasing efficiency by 40x, TransCanada and a waste solidification provider had the confidence that their soil was reaching its destination in compliance with all ministry requirements. During this time, they had live oversight of trucks and received MORE data instantaneously with trucking logs compiled automatically.
